“How many are there?” Jessica asked Ann when they’d finished eating. Hailey sat quietly on the next bunk.

“At least seven,” Ann replied. “But the bigger obstacle is the two locked doors.”

“Two?”

“There’s always noise from further away before they pound on our door. I’m guessing that means at least one more locked door between us and freedom. Maybe more.”

Jessica nodded. “And even if we did get through both those doors, we have no idea who or what might be on the other side.”

“Agreed,” Ann said. “I don’t think we’re getting out of here until they decide to move us.”

“When do you think that’ll be?”

“Graciela said they were held a little over a week before they were moved, which seems long. I’ve been here four days, so probably any time now. A few more days at most.”

“So, we’ve got somewhere between no time and a few days to figure out how to escape when they move us, right?” Jessica asked.

“Yeah. But we’ve got one other thing on our side,” Ann said.

“What’s that?”

“They don’t want to hurt us.”

Jessica felt the burn on her back. “How do you figure that?”

“Remember the guy with the broken nose? The first night I was here he came for me. The second night he came for Hailey. The third night he was coming for you.”

Jessica’s eyes opened wide.

“Graciela and I stopped him, put some pretty good scratches on his face. Another guy came in and told him the old guy would kill him if he hurt us. The next morning his nose was broken. My guess is the old guy did it. He doesn’t want us hurt.”

“What’s that mean?” Jessica said.

Ann shrugged. “Maybe we have a little more power than we think. If we fight back, maybe they won’t kill us.”

“But how? I mean, I’ve taken a couple of self-defense classes, but nothing that would help us here. How about you?”

Ann laughed bitterly. “I’m an auditor. Unless they give me access to their books, I’m not sure what I can do.”

“Too bad. I was hoping you were a cop, or former army, or something like that. What about Hailey?”

“I don’t know. Never asked.” Turning to Hailey, Ann said, “Hey. Hailey. What do you do for a living?”

Hailey stared back and then closed her eyes and rolled over.

“I’m guessing not a cop,” Ann said.

“No,” Jessica agreed. “I guess not.”
