âHow many are there?â Jessica asked Ann when theyâd finished eating. Hailey sat quietly on the next bunk.
âAt least seven,â Ann replied. âBut the bigger obstacle is the two locked doors.â
âTwo?â
âThereâs always noise from further away before they pound on our door. Iâm guessing that means at least one more locked door between us and freedom. Maybe more.â
Jessica nodded. âAnd even if we did get through both those doors, we have no idea who or what might be on the other side.â
âAgreed,â Ann said. âI donât think weâre getting out of here until they decide to move us.â
âWhen do you think thatâll be?â
âGraciela said they were held a little over a week before they were moved, which seems long. Iâve been here four days, so probably any time now. A few more days at most.â
âSo, weâve got somewhere between no time and a few days to figure out how to escape when they move us, right?â Jessica asked.
âYeah. But weâve got one other thing on our side,â Ann said.
âWhatâs that?â
âThey donât want to hurt us.â
Jessica felt the burn on her back. âHow do you figure that?â
âRemember the guy with the broken nose? The first night I was here he came for me. The second night he came for Hailey. The third night he was coming for you.â
Jessicaâs eyes opened wide.
âGraciela and I stopped him, put some pretty good scratches on his face. Another guy came in and told him the old guy would kill him if he hurt us. The next morning his nose was broken. My guess is the old guy did it. He doesnât want us hurt.â
âWhatâs that mean?â Jessica said.
Ann shrugged. âMaybe we have a little more power than we think. If we fight back, maybe they wonât kill us.â
âBut how? I mean, Iâve taken a couple of self-defense classes, but nothing that would help us here. How about you?â
Ann laughed bitterly. âIâm an auditor. Unless they give me access to their books, Iâm not sure what I can do.â
âToo bad. I was hoping you were a cop, or former army, or something like that. What about Hailey?â
âI donât know. Never asked.â Turning to Hailey, Ann said, âHey. Hailey. What do you do for a living?â
Hailey stared back and then closed her eyes and rolled over.
âIâm guessing not a cop,â Ann said.
âNo,â Jessica agreed. âI guess not.â
